MS. PERINO: Hello. One announcement for you. As I said yesterday, the President would be meeting this morning in the Roosevelt Room with people who are in recovery and leaders in drug prevention, treatment and law enforcement, and he will highlight some of the successes that have contributed to our nation’s reduction in drug use in many areas. In 2002, he set an ambitious goal of reducing youth drug use by 25 percent over five years, and to work towards that goal the administration implemented a balanced strategy that emphasized three things: prevention, treatment and enforcement.

President Bush Participates in Meeting on Drug Use Reduction – December 11, 2008
President Bush on Thursday said, “And our strategy is threefold: one, reduce demand, interdict supply, and then help people who have become addicts. And we’re making progress. No question there’s still work to do in America, but we are making progress. And one way to note the progress is this statistic: Since 2001, teenage use has declined by 25 percent. That means 900,000 fewer teens on drugs.”

Fact Sheet: President Bush Has Improved The Lives Of America’s Youth
Today, President Bush announced new data that demonstrates continued progress reducing drug availability and use since 2001. New youth drug use data from the Monitoring the Future Study showed continued reductions in overall youth drug use over the past seven years, and new law enforcement and workplace drug test data show a significant disruption in the cocaine market.
