Fact Sheet: Committed to Cleaner, More Abundant Domestic Energy
Today, President Bush toured the Lincoln Electric Company in Cleveland, Ohio, and discussed his Administration’s actions to address high gasoline prices. The President and his Administration are working to create greater energy security for our Nation. With the understanding that there is no short-term solution to high energy prices, President Bush is taking action to expand domestic production, increase vehicle efficiency, and promote alternative fuels to reduce the impact on American families. The President recognizes that we cannot rely on just one energy source; we need all of them. With only three days left before leaving for yet another recess, the Democrat-led Congress has failed to take action to improve our energy security.

Statement by the Press Secretary
At the beginning of his Administration, President Bush set a goal to end chronic homelessness in America. Today, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Preston reported that the Administration has continued to make progress on this goal. The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress reports that chronic homelessness decreased an average of 15% per year between 2005 – 2007 and demonstrates that targeted, focused resources can achieve measurable results.

President Bush Discusses Energy and Economy
President Bush on Tuesday said, “I really want to talk to you about energy. I understand what it means to our families and our small businesses and people right here in this room to be paying high energy prices, high gasoline prices, like a tax. I’ve worked hard to keep your taxes low. Our energy policy hasn’t done a very good job of keeping your gasoline prices low, and therefore it’s like paying a tax. My whole philosophy of government, by the way, is, yes, we’ve obviously got some needs in Washington, D.C.; the primary one is to make sure those who wear the uniform have the full support of the government of the United States of America.”

Statement by the Press Secretary on President Bush’s Meeting with Chinese Freedom Activists
Today in The White House Residence, President Bush met with five Chinese freedom activists to discuss his concerns about human rights in China. The President assured them that he will carry the message of freedom as he travels to Beijing for the games, just as he has regularly made this a priority in all of his meetings with Chinese officials. He told the activists that engagement with Chinese leaders gives him an opportunity to make the United State s’ position clear – human rights and religious freedom should not be denied to anyone.
