  • Statement by the Press Secretary

We are pleased that the Congress passed legislation to extend SCHIP
until March 31, 2009 - and did so without raising taxes. This bill
ensures that this important program for America’s low-income children
will remain in place. Ultimately our goal should be to move children
who have no health insurance to private coverage — not to move
children who already have private insurance to government coverage.
With this bill, we can be assured that children will continue to have
coverage, and Democrats won’t be able to play election-year politics
with children’s health. At the same time, we are pleased that Congress
found a way to avoid scheduled reductions in Medicare physician
payments without making irresponsible cuts to the Medicare Advantage
program which provides benefits to over 20 percent of Medicare
    beneficiaries.

  • Statement by the Press Secretary

We’re pleased that today Congress was finally able to pass legislation
    — without raising taxes — that will protect 21 million additional
Americans from being subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax this year.
The AMT was never intended to hit these middle-class taxpayers, and
the last thing they or the U.S. economy needs is a tax increase.
Although passing the legislation this late in the year will make it
difficult for the Internal Revenue Service to prepare the appropriate
forms so that Americans can get their refunds on time, we know that
the IRS will do everything possible to prevent delays.

  • Presidential Message: Eid al-Adha

I send holiday greetings to all Muslims celebrating Eid al-Adha. During Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world reflect on Abraham’s
unwavering faith and his trust in God when asked to sacrifice his son.
These four days are a time for Muslims to honor Abraham’s obedience by
celebrating with family and friends and showing gratitude for the many
blessings bestowed by God. This holiday also helps ensure the
important values of compassion and devotion are passed on to future
    generations.

  • Fact Sheet: Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007

Today, President Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which will improve vehicle fuel economy and help reduce U.S. dependence on oil. The bill the President signed today responds to the challenge of his bold “Twenty in Ten” initiative, which President Bush announced in January. It represents a major step forward in expanding the production of renewable fuels, reducing our dependence on oil, and confronting global climate change. It will increase our energy security, expand the production of renewable fuels, and make America stronger, safer, and cleaner for future generations.

  • Press Briefing by Dana Perino - 12/19/2007

MS. PERINO: Hello. I have an update for you on the fire. Today, at 9:15 a.m., the D.C. Fire Department received a call about smoke in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building — that’s also known as the EEOB. Firefighters arrived and found that the second floor through the fifth floor of the EEOB was fairly filled with smoke. They located an area on the second floor of the EEOB. Initial reports is that it appears to be an electrical room, a closet — or a telephone bank, they’re not quite sure and we’ll get more information from the U.S. Secret Service and D.C. firefighters later, I’m sure. But they do believe that that area is the origin of the fire.
