  • Statement on Federal Disaster Assistance for Oklahoma

    The President today declared a major disaster exists in the State of
    Oklahoma and ordered Federal aid to supplement State and local
    recovery efforts in the area struck by severe winter storms on
    December 8, 2007, and continuing.

  • President Bush Signs H.R. 3315 into Law

    On Tuesday, December 18, 2007, the President signed into law: H.R. 3315, which designates the great hall of the Capitol Visitor Center as Emancipation Hall.

  • President Bush Approves Significant Reduction in Nuclear Weapons Stockpile

    The President has approved a significant reduction in the U.S. nuclear
    weapons stockpile to take effect by the end of 2007. The President’s
    decision, made on the recommendation of Secretary of Defense Robert
    Gates and Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman with the full support of
    the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Commander, United States Strategic
    Command, follows a major reduction previously announced in 2004. As a
    result, the U.S. nuclear stockpile will be less than one-quarter its
    size at the end of the Cold War.

    On Tuesday, President Bush said, “I want to thank you all for making cards for our troops in harm’s way. As I worked the tables I was most thankful that people here said that they pray for our troops, the safety of our troops. And so do I. And so does Laura. And one way to let our troops know that people care deeply about their safety and their well-being is to send them a Christmas card, which you all are fixing to do here. So I thank you for that, as well.”
