  • Statement by the Press Secretary

We appreciate the U.S. Senate passing a clean, one-year patch of the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) this evening – as the President has called on them to do since February. If left unaddressed, the AMT would result in an unexpected, unfair tax increase for as many as 25 million Americans. This would mean that these taxpayers would have to pay, on average, an extra $2000 in higher taxes next year. We encourage the House of Representatives to swiftly pass this bill to stop this tax increase, and to prevent a costly delay in refunds.

  • Press Briefing by Dana Perino – 12/06/2007

MS. PERINO: Hi, everybody. Just a quick comment. The President, as you know, at 1:40 p.m., is going to make a statement after getting a briefing from Secretaries Paulson and Jackson on housing. In August, the President proposed legislative reforms to assist struggling homeowners. Among the President’s reform proposals was Federal Housing Administration modernization. The President actually proposed that first in April of 2006. He’s also proposed tax reform, endorsing one of Senator Sabenow’s proposals on that regard.

  • President Bush Discusses Housing – December 6, 2007

On Thursday, President Bush said, “The holidays are fast approaching and, unfortunately, this will be a time of anxiety for Americans worried about their mortgages and their homes. There’s no perfect solution, but the homeowners deserve our help. And the steps I’ve outlined today are a sensible response to a serious challenge. I call on Congress to move forward quickly, and join me in delivering relief to homeowners in need — so we can keep our economy healthy and the American Dream alive.”

  • President Bush Attends Lighting of the National Christmas Tree Ceremony – December 6, 2007

President Bush on Thursday said, “During this Christmas season, millions of Americans will answer this call by reaching out a compassionate hand to help brothers and sisters in need. We are thankful for these good souls who show the good heart of our nation. We’re also thankful for the thousands of Americans who answer the call by serving our nation in uniform. Many will spend this Christmas stationed in distant and dangerous lands, far from homes and from the families they love. They are never far from our thoughts, and they’re always in our prayers. America honors their sacrifice, and that of their families who also serve our nation. We’re grateful for all they do to ensure that we live in the freedom our Creator intended for every man, woman, and child on the face of this Earth.”

  • Statement by the Press Secretary on Energy Security

We believe that reducing our dependence on foreign oil and increasing
energy security is an area where both parties should be able to find
common ground. Unfortunately, Democratic leaders in the House today
pushed a partisan bill, that members had very little opportunity to
study before the vote, which they knew was unacceptable to the
President and had no chance being signed into law. Their proposal
would raise taxes and increase energy prices for Americans. That is a
misguided approach and if it made it to the President’s desk, he would
    veto it.

  • Human Rights Day, Bill of Rights Day, and Human Rights Week, 2007

Americans value deeply our ability to speak, assemble, and worship freely. As a Nation, we can help freedom-loving people everywhere build a world in which these rights are honored and respected. During Human Rights Day, Bill of Rights Day, and Human Rights Week, we celebrate the freedoms guaranteed to all Americans and protected in our Constitution’s Bill of Rights.
