  • Statement on Vice President Cheney’s Medical Procedure

    The Vice President visited his doctors at George Washington University
    Hospital this afternoon for evaluation and treatment of atrial
    fibrillation (an abnormal rhythm involving the upper chambers of the
    heart) which was discovered incidentally this morning during
    examination for a lingering cough from a cold. The procedure went smoothly and without complication. The Vice
    President has returned home and will resume his normal schedule
    tomorrow at the White House.

    On Monday, President Bush said, “We’ve come together this week because we share a common goal: two democratic states — Israel and Palestine — living side by side in peace and security. Achieving this goal requires difficult compromises — and the Israelis and Palestinians have elected leaders committed to making them. Achieving this goal requires neighbors committed to peace between Israel and a new Palestinian state — and I’m encouraged by the presence of so many here. Achieving this goal requires the commitment of the international community, including the United States. Tonight I restate my personal commitment on behalf of the United States to all those in the Middle East who wish to live in freedom and peace: We stand with you, at the Annapolis Conference and beyond.”

    As Iraqi leaders confirmed in their Communiqu signed on August 26,
    2007, and endorsed by President Bush, the Governments of Iraq and the
    United States are committed to developing a long-term relationship of
    cooperation and friendship as two fully sovereign and independent
    states with common interests. This relationship will serve the
    interest of coming generations based on the heroic sacrifices made by
    the Iraqi people and the American people for the sake of a free,
    democratic, pluralistic, federal, and unified Iraq.

  • Statement by the President on Russia

    I am deeply concerned about the detention of numerous human rights
    activists and political leaders who participated in peaceful rallies
    in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, and Nazran this
    weekend. I am particularly troubled by the use of force by law
    enforcement authorities to stop these peaceful activities and to
    prevent some journalists and human rights activists from covering
    them.

    President Bush on Monday said, “We want to help you. We want there to be peace. We want the people in
    the Palestinian Territories to have hope. And we thank you for your
    willingness to sit down with Israel to negotiate the settlement. The United States cannot impose our vision, but we can help
    facilitate. And the process will begin tonight at the State
    Department, and then on to Annapolis tomorrow. And I want to thank you
