    Officer Germain Casey of the Rio Rancho Police Department died today from injuries suffered while serving as a member of my security detail in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I am deeply saddened by his death and extraordinarily grateful for his protection. It is a high calling to choose to serve and protect your fellow citizens, and I will always be indebted to Officer Casey’s service.

    The President today declared a major disaster exists in the State of
    Ohio and ordered Federal aid to supplement State and local recovery
    efforts in the area struck by severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes
    beginning on August 20, 2007, and continuing.

    announced that he will leave the Department of Justice, after two and
    a half years of service to the department. Al Gonzales is a man of
    integrity, decency and principle. And I have reluctantly accepted his
    resignation, with great appreciation for the service that he has
    provided for our country.”
