Personnel Announcement
President George W. Bush today announced that he has named James F.
Jeffrey to be Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security
Advisor. Ambassador Jeffrey, a career member of the Foreign Service,
previously served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the
Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the Department of State. His
responsibilities included leading the Iran Policy Team and
coordinating public diplomacy. -

Red Storm Rising Chinese Import Scandal Demonstrates FDA Failings, Congress Told CSPI Urges New Money for FDA, Ultimately Single Food Safety Agency WASHINGTON — While all imported meat and poultry products are visually inspected at the border and subject to microbial and chemical testing, 99 percent of imported seafood, produce, animal feeds, and grains pass through U.S. borders uninspected. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, that’s because meat and poultry products are regulated by the well funded U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and most other foods are regulated by the woefully underfunded Food and Drug Administration (FDA). CSPI food safety director Caroline Smith DeWaal, testifying before the House Energy and Commerce’s Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight today, said that even when USDA and FDA are operating at the same port, they don’t share

Press Briefing by Tony Snow – 7/31/2007
MR. SNOW: Good afternoon. A couple of preliminary notes, and then I’ll take your questions. First, the President had a call today with Canadian Prime Minister Harper. They talked for 20 minutes. The two leaders, along with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, will meet on August 20 and 21st, in Montebello, Canada. It will be the third time that the three North American leaders have met during this administration.

Text of a Letter from the President to the Speaker of the House of Representatives
I ask the Congress to consider the enclosed revisions to the FY 2008 Budget request for Department of Defense operations in the Global War on Terror. This request would provide the additional resources necessary to maximize the production of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles and rapidly field this capability to our servicemembers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Overall, the discretionary budget authority in my FY 2008 request for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom would be increased by $5.3 billion, for a Department of Defense total of $147.0 billion for these operations.

The President today declared an emergency exists in the Federated States
of Micronesia and ordered Federal aid to supplement national and state
response efforts in the area impacted by a drought beginning on March 5,
2007, and continuing. -
Interview of the Vice President by Larry King, CNN
THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, every administration does, to some extent, Larry. But I think in the end, it will depend upon the results and what ultimately happens. I think history will judge us well, if we’re successful in achieving the objectives we’ve set. I think the President has made some crucial decisions, very important decisions, very difficult decisions. But I think what we’ve done in Afghanistan, for example, and in Iraq, which represents liberating 50 million people from two of the worst regimes in modern times, is a very significant achievement.
